FRIENDS OF ARCHBISHOPS PARK

A Little Bit of History

Archbishops Park dates back to the early 1900s and was originally part of the grounds belonging to Lambeth Palace. It comprises of a 10 acre site and is owned by the Church Commissioners, although currently managed under lease by the London Borough of Lambeth. It is well contained by mature trees, notably the London Plane which surrounds the north and east boundaries. Over the years it has provided a place for relaxation and recreation, away from the bustle of the surrounding transport links, offices and amenities.

Raising Key Funds To Make Vital Improvements

Involving children with our projects can be challenging as a lot of the work involves restoration, but when the northern shelter was refurbished, we saw an opportunity to work with schools which would encourage children to get involved with their park.
Working with Johanna Primary, Evelina Children’s Hospital and the Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre, the Friends commissioned once again the skills of mosaic artist and teacher David Tootill from South Bank Mosaics. David worked with the children to create artwork for the shelter by using the theme of the four seasons and created mosaic pictures to reflect the Park at different times of the year. These were then mounted inside the shelter.
