Improving The Cut
The project is lead by the Cross River Partnership CRP with the guidance of a representative steering group of which WCDG is a member. In April 2006 WCDG were approached by the CRP along with TFL to help consult the residents and local businesses of Waterloo with a questionnaire and public meetings to find out what the public wanted in the new design of The Cut. The initial questionnaire can be found here.
As the survey has already been conducted and designs are now finalised there is no need to complete and return the form
An initial analysis of the existing layout of The Cut can be seen here.
Some of the key factors in changing the cut included the assessment of Waste disposal, Parking, Congestion, Road crossings, Unused pavement space, and Untidy streets and No Green Space.
The results and findings of the survey were analysed and summarised into a report that WCDG was commissioned to complete for the project, to be submitted to TFL in the application
The report can be read here.
And summary can be downloaded here
After further consultation at public meetings with the architects Pell Frischmann and the landscape designers Cracknell Ferns, initial designs were inspected and commented on before being submitted to Transport for London
Initial designs can be seen here in a PDF report on pages 4 and 5.
From the initial designs they concluded that the trees in the middle of the road would not seem viable after further investigations is became clear that moving pipework for the trees was not viable. After further meetings and representation from WCDG, we managed to convince the designers to increase the number of trees, to compensate as much as possible
After consulting with the public, Cracknell Ferns redesigned these designs to version 2 as seen here.
The final design was approved in August prior to submitting the final Application to Transport for London.
In the summer of 2006 CRP submitted detailed design plans to Transport for London (TfL) to improve The Cut. The volume of traffic on the street has fallen over the past couple of years making this a real opportunity to create a ‘living street’ and reduce rat-running in the area.
The plans were successful and approved for funding from TfL in December 2006. Work will start in January 2007 and will run in different stages throughout the year.
Refurbishing The Cut 2007
The first stage to hit the CUT will be the Thames Valley water mains replacement. Starting in Mid January this is first in the development stages of the design.
